March Viruses
The votes have been weighed, the votes have been measured, and-- wait, no.

Poll's closed, and the winners are Daemons and Last Day! You can see when they are on the suitably St. Patrick's Day-themed calendar.

Last Day is pretty much what it sounds like-- for whatever reason, a character is 100% sure that today is their last day alive. Syphilis catching up with Cross, a mafia hit out on Edgeworth, Tamaki developing a fatal allergy to instant coffee-- any reason you can swing, go for it.

Daemons is a little more complicated, but really doesn't require knowledge of the series to understand. Here's the detailed wiki entry, but in summary:

- A daemon is essentially the character's soul in animal form. It's kind of like the animal virus, except the character's own body doesn't change-- a shy person might have a rabbit, a sailor might have a dolphin, etc. Get creative, though! In the books, a tough soldier had a desert hare, because it's unexpectedly hardy.
- They only settle into one form after puberty, though; a children's daemon is able to freely change animal forms at will, although for children right on the line, their daemon may start to tend towards one sort of animal or another.
- Daemons cannot travel more than a handful of yards from their human without physical and emotional discomfort on both sides.
- Daemons can talk and be understood to both humans and other daemons alike; how much they do so, though, depends on the individual, so feel free to NPC them as much or as little as you like.
- Daemons are usually, but not always, the opposite sex of their human.
- They have names, but their names come from all over-- Finnish, Greek, Hebrew, whatever you like.

If you have any questions, go ahead and ask!

Drop
I'm incredibly sorry for having to do this. I've had a lot going on with me, and Chekov seems to have completely retreated from my headspace. I just can't summon up his voice or the motivation/time to tag.

I really want to apologize to my cast for being such a fail castmate. I love you all, and every single one of you is fantastic. Keep being awesome, all of you.

Live long and prosper, my friends.

Daemon Virus.
Heeeey everyone, your friendly neighborhood Norr here to help out with some info regarding our upcoming Daemon virus.

The virus originates from the His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman-- some of you might have seen the Golden Compass movie that came out a few years ago and have some general knowledge of what a daemon is or what its purpose is but should you not-- NEVER FEAR, I am here. c:

So, the basic concept of a daemon is that:
-- It's a physical manifestation of your soul.

In the books, people have daemons from the moment their born. When they are children, it can change shape and form at will until the child reaches a certain adolescent point. In the books, it's implied this is puberty. At that point, your daemon is forced into one form-- always an animal-- and the animal is a representation of your character's... well, character. That is to say, if you have a very sneaky character, their daemon may be a fox. If you have a quiet, demure character, their daemon may be a fawn/deer or a mouse. It works off stereotypes essentially, but the more subtle you can make it, the more fun it is to try and figure out how exactly that represents your character.

Additionally, feel free to be specific with your species! they can be native to where your character is from-- and being we have a lot of worlds present in this game, that could be interesting (meaning it can be an animal indigenous to your character's world!). For example, there's a gritty western desert man who ended up having a gritty western desert hare instead of just a bunny rabbit. You have a lot of room for creativity here.

-- The gender is 9.9999999 times out of 10 the opposite of your character.

In the books, again, practically every character's daemon is male if they're female and female if they're male. There are some very rare exceptions and a lot of fan speculation as to why that is but that's just how it is in Lyra's world. Throughout the entire series we never meet someone with the same gendered daemon. The author pretty much has no explanation for this, but that says something about the standard here. What I'm nicely trying to say here is don't be a special snowflake.

-- Emotional Trauma and Your Daemon.

If you choose to only read one part of this tl;dr, please read this. The book is very heavy handed about the relationship between daemons and their 'owners' or hosts, whichever you prefer to see it as. It's explained very clearly and very often that any sort of physical distance between you and your daemon is incredibly painful-- consider it as your soul being ripped from you. Literally ripped. There is a character's daemon who simply flies upward to look in a window and the experience is expressed to be something like the feeling of loss or potential loss-- an encompassing, overwhelming discomfort. This is why daemons are always by their owners side, no matter what. If your daemon is able to go comfortably some distance from you, that's incredibly unusual (but something to consider for people who are described as being 'without souls' and what have you-- you can play with this, but please be very aware that it's has physical effects on your character).

Additionally, in His Dark Materials, it is considered well known etiquette that you Do Not Touch Other People's Daemons. It's like if someone came up to you and began holding your hand and generally being up in your shit-- it's incredibly uncomfortable and feels like a supreme violation of personal space. There are also levels to this discomfort that will depend on your character's relationship with the person they are interacting with (should they initiate touching your character's daemon); for example, the amount of discomfort (though it would persist solely because of the nature of daemons) may be lessened should it be someone you generally trust vs. someone you don't know at all.

Think of it like this: imagine someone was able to reach inside you and hold your soul. Immediately, this feels like it would be an uncomfortable experience no matter what-- but then consider the level of discomfort between say your husband/wife or someone you trust doing this verses a complete stranger. This is all basically to say it needs to be treated with some obvious sensitivity.

Being the nature of DDD is generally journal based, there shouldn't be a lot of stranger-to-daemon touching (I'm personally assuming most RL's will be between friends or acquaintances that have some level of familiarity and trust) but should it happen be very aware of the in character consequences as it can result and should result in severe emotional trauma. It has been equated to rape, though I'm not going to personally make that comparison but it is very, very damaging. In the event you are knowingly going to inflict this kind of trauma on your character, please follow our community rules and seek mod permission and make the necessary cuts and warnings.

It should be finally noted that interaction between daemons has absolutely no physical or emotional effect on the hosts/owners. A lot of their behavior may mimic their host/owners too, for example-- in a yelling fight, a cat daemon may hiss viciously at the other daemon whether or not it is personally affronted by them. This is not to say that they mirror their owners entirely-- daemons are notably completely sentient and capable of speech and understanding as if they were human themselves-- but that being a manifestation of the soul, they are compelled to represent that.

-- Everything else:

There are two ways to play this:

- 1. Your character is essentially au'd slightly for the virus and feels like they have had their daemon their entire life.
- 2. Your character manifests a daemon suddenly. Though this is abrupt, for the sake of this virus and avoiding accidentally traumatizing each other, they will know what a daemon is.

That is to say, no matter which way you choose your character will have the learned knowledge of what daemons are and the 'etiquette' that comes with them no matter what.

PLEASE feel free to come to this post to be clarified on anything. No question is a stupid question and me and Suki will be fielding questions regarding stuff. If you have anything else to ad that you feel is necessary daemon knowledge, you are more than welcome to supply that too and I will add it to the post WHICH IS MASSIVE SOB. Have at it.
