What's up?
Greetings?
To make a long story short, I've been stalking the writing journal of one of your fellow players and after commenting on a few of their ddd fanworks was urged to join and made the cut. Thus, I'll be your resident Greed.
Went with the classic anime Greed such that we don't run into any complications if we get a Ling, as well as the fact that the nature of Homunculi is a little more clearly spelled out in that canon as is this particular character's exact history.
Good to meet you? OOC introductory posts aren't my strong suit.

I enjoy Greed. The nice thing about him is that while his history is dynamically modified into a major cornerstone of the anime-only plot, his personality is 100% intact across both canons. The problem of whether or not someone can apply for manga Greed and NOT take Ling, thus cutting off any potential Ling's options is all someone else's problem~~

I see! I just got into the manga pretty recently. I never actually saw the first anime, but I should, I've heard so much about it.

With FMA, the manga's by far the fan favored medium. In fact, most manga fans hate the anime for being different (whereas I love the manga but hate the new anime "loyally" based on it more than any single thing I have ever been forced to sit down and watch in my entire life).
The authoress made that her single irrefutable term on the first anime production: that it have a different story such that no part of her story was aired before it was published in the manga, because she didn't want to have to rush any of her story or have spoilers for the manga spilled out in the anime. Whether that excuses what some term as a BAD rewrite is the question. Basically, the anime is the manga with a lot more punching the viewer in the nuts. Depending on who you ask, the first anime is either heavier and angstier or melodramatic and wangstier.
I'm more of a casual viewer/reader of the GiTS series. Is there much of a popular opinion split on its incarnations?

Yeah, I'm a little wary of watching the first series, since I love the manga so much. But I know a lot of people who do really love the first anime, in spite of the differences. So I'm definitely marking it as worth looking into when I have the time.
Not really, as far as I know. People have preferences, of course (for example, my favorite is S.A.C., while our Togusa likes the Oshii movies the best), but from what I've seen it's not something people really feel worth seriously arguing over. ...Though certain things are acknowledged to suck, such as the second volume of the manga.
