The SNES and PSX versions of the game have been fan-translated, and there is some patches floating around if you look. I'll leave it up to you to obtain the original game somehow.
I honestly recommend Absolute Zero's (http://zettaizero.wordpress.com/top-translation/) PSX translation over the SNES version, as DeJap's (http://www.dejap.com/) translation apparently kind of took just a few 'liberties' with the script. Hilarious liberties (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQjZ8SYEgww), but still. Here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXunlxprk7c) the PSX version for comparison.
But the main reason why I recommend the PSX version is because the gameplay is slightly better, and not as frustrating as the SNES version. As in, the battle system is improved and the encounter rate is greatly reduced. (which means no more random battles every five steps you take!) 8D For more info, just check this page (http://www.tales-cless.org/?page=tales) out for a summary.
Adding on to this...
