HALP!

I've run into a rather irritating problem. My muses are being problematic, and fading in and out of character (if you couldn't tell!)

So I've got a question: How do you guys keep your muses in check?

I'd love to rewatch their respective animes and reread their books, but I just don't have the time for that. And I'd prefer not to have to go on hiatus. Still, its a problem when you can't tell which of your four muses is talking at any given time.

Suggestions?

For me, I just try to keep them in random conversations or situations. Look at fanstuff, keep thinking about their fandom or show or whatever. Keep making history for them.

Stuff like that. :/

:/

I was going to say. I rewatch or reread but not all of it. Just bits and pieces to get the voice back in my head. But not all at once. Sort of space them out in reviewing. And/Or Wiki. :)

That might do it :)
Or maybe finding a dressing room, for the fandom, you could use him in as well?
Just to keep the voice going there.

Ah, I see. I know what you mean. Believe me I do.

I wonder if Getbackers has a dressing room. I've never looked...

Not that I don't like what's going on in Frosts world right now! Just that Kabuto having a *normal* life while hes adjusting is kind of difficult to play.

Oh God. I have to keep rewatching/rereading stuff over and over again in order to keep the muses IC, but sometimes it doesn't always work. Like if you have a character who doesn't appear/talk all that much in their respective canons <.

[identity profile] jagan-glare.livejournal.com 2008-10-28 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Are there any specific ones that are giving you trouble, or is it all of them?

[personal profile] sound_council 2008-10-28 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Mostly Himiko and Kabuto, sadly. The other two either have some basic reactions they can fall back on - or can disappear off the comm for a while with out causing any upset.

But Himiko is kind of departing cannon when it comes to her reactions to certain relationships.

And I can't seem to play Kabuto right when he's out of his world, and out from Orochimaru's thumb.

[identity profile] jagan-glare.livejournal.com 2008-10-28 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
So it seems like it's a matter of trying to play a bit of headcanon while trying to remain IC with them. Hmmm.... :\

Have there ever been situations in either chara's canon that would be similar to what they're dealing with in the comm?
sound_council: (*sigh*)

[personal profile] sound_council 2008-10-28 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
*nodnod*

Well, one of my problems might be that I don't 'get' post Kabuchimaru Kabuto as much as I do his other self. So while the cannon is similar to whats going on here (the idea being to help the Sound move through its cannon) its still really hard for me to play.

As for Himiko...I don't think she has any relationships in the anime, correct? So that really is uncharted territory. (Though just talking about it is helping!)

maraich: (And then she said...)

[personal profile] maraich 2008-10-28 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
I stay in Maraich-mode most the time.
Kurt is so extremely different that there's no real way to confuse the two.
And for Klaus, I go over whichever part of the canon he's at before I post with him.

[personal profile] sound_council 2008-10-28 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Maybe if I made a point of only roleplaying one character at a time? That might stop Kabuto and Karakael getting confused, and The Visitor and Himiko.
maraich: (Nummy!)

[personal profile] maraich 2008-10-28 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm lazy, and especially since I'm still getting used to using this laptop I don't like to log out a bunch. I tend to stick to one character for a period of time.
Like, if I post as Klaus then I'm ready to reply as Klaus for that period of time.

Just hearing their voice really helps me. Opening up YouTube and finding a clip of them saying something, just so I can get that sound in my head.

Oooh. That is a good idea! (Though I refuse to watch 'ninja info cards' on more time! XD)

I had that problem with Kratos a while back, and though I always seem to think I'm doing badly with him anyway, I do feel more comfortable playing him again now. As others have said, I find the best way to get their voice back is to listen to it again. Even if you don't have time to rewatch and reread material, even just finding a short clip or reading an excerpt where the character speaks and interacts with others might help.

For Kratos I played the game for a while the other day. Granted I didn't even see him (since I'm at the point where he doesn't show up for a while) but even just playing it a little and familiarising myself with his world and the people in it helped. I also watched a ton of AMVs from the OVA and some random parodies, some of which included his voice even if they weren't completely serious. XD

I might not be trying to juggle multiple characters but I'd do what Maraich and Yuan said and just stick with one muse at a time for a while. And building up strong relationships with characters from other fandoms will help you feel less uncomfortable playing someone out of their world. Even if it's just one person to start with it can lead on from there and since you'll (hopefully) feel more comfortable then, it won't be so hard branching out.

I often feel awkward having Kratos comment to random posts when he probably wouldn't even have joined here in the first place. For the sake of the comm, I have to force him to say something, even if perhaps it isn't completely IC. But at least if you can get a thread going, it might come more naturally after a while? Making him a little more talkative is the only way I've been able to get him interacting with others really. XD; I think the more you just put them out there even in entirely random situations, the less awkward it will begin to feel.

And since this is getting tl;dr I'll leave it there. I'm sure you'll be fine~ :3

Thank you! All of your suggestions are great. (and you summarized everyone elses in to one post. A+ for usefulness! XD)

I'm definitely going to have to look up some clips for Kabuto and Himiko. (And maybe reread through The Visitors monologue of doom, and *shudder* Karakaels 'Carrie' party scene/backstory.)

[identity profile] halfdeimos-king.livejournal.com 2008-10-28 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
While you might not have time to re-read/watch the entirety of their respective canons, re-reading/watching significant scenes involving your character(s) may help just as much. :) For example, on YouTube, there are plenty of videos of just specific scenes as opposed to entire episodes, even if it's just part of a fight scene or "LOL MY FAV SCENE WHERE SO-'N-SO FALLS DOWN".

If I may use a more personal example from my experience, Darc is one of the characters that I have a harder time with. He's moody, and nearly switches personalities at the drop of a hat (his "human side" and "Deimos side", and hell sometimes he's a little of both). There aren't many videos from his canon online (and most of which were uploaded by me in the first place), but even just watching those seems to help. Re-watching the ending cinematic reminded me that Darc can be kind of corny too. Plus there's also a game script uploaded to Game FAQs, and skimming through scenes involving him help me re-grasp his speech style, vocabulary, relationships, etc.

So uh, long story short, a little bit can go a long way. Bookmark your character's most significant and/or your favourite scenes in their book canons and just read through those. Or in the case of anime canon, look up the same sort of scenes involving them. If they have a theme song, listening to that can help too.

I hope all this helps! ♥

It does help, a bunch. Luckly I have booked marked some of my favorite parts of all their series. (And just rereading a bit of the Inquest will get Karakael back in character...even if he's only a minor character!)

[identity profile] hyperresonates.livejournal.com 2008-10-28 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
For Luke, I'm replaying the game and also watching the anime as it airs. Personally, what I like to do is take notes. If Luke is acting a particular way or reacting a way in response to something, I write it down. If he does anything notable or unusual, I write that down too.

I basically write down everything I see about his character, especially if it's something I never noticed before. I've considered posting the notes I had in his journal, but it'd probably just take up space. ^^;

And also, when I'm feeling like I don't have the muse, I find it easier to have Luke thread with the people he's kind of close to, like Guy or Tear and such. It helps a lot when trying to get a feel for their voices again.

That's all I have to offer. If you don't have the time to take notes, I say try having them interact with the people they're close to(or just talk to a lot) for now. Then maybe take some notes when you think you have the time?

In addition to what other people have said, one thing I can suggest is constructing a situation for people to react to. I've had trouble with Cinnamon lately, but when I came up with the "Maverick" thing, her muse came easily to me.
