Tif and I are going to be writing a newbie FAQ to put up on the Wiki. We'll be compiling a lot of the information that's already up there, but I don't think it covers some of the more common questions that get asked. That's where you come in! :Db

Can you think of some questions you've seen asked a lot that you think the FAQ would benefit from having? How about questions that you haven't seen asked? Hell, what about questions you've been afraid to ask (those are probably the best!)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! ♥

I figure stuff about world hopping, communication, and ... time lines would all be good things to have on there. But, I haven't read the FAQ, so there could possibly already be all those things already. XD XD XD

I think we talked about this already, but a checklist of sorts of things that newbies need to do upon approval would probably be a really good first step, especially if you included links. Things like friending all the other members, updating their information on the wiki and how to do that, putting contact info on their journal, etc. It'd probably be helpful even for long-established players, to make sure they have all their ducks*coughs* in a row when they pick up someone new XD

Where do babies come from?

Probably a link to the explanation that characters aren't on the same world (because most LJ RPs seem to involve characters getting randomly sucked into the same place).
Explanation on worldhoppers and who can be a worldhopper.
Maybe some tips on how to get involved (try to make your intro post at a time when you can reply to people, the chatroom, IMing people, responding to other's posts...)

Oh, definitely! And I'm also going to suggest not making an intro post during a virus. Sound good? It always makes me sad when someone intros, but doesn't get any responses because everyone's heavily involved in a virus... :(

I just thought of something. Maybe there could be a beginner-beginner's guide. Like for someone who is joining their first LJ RP.
For example, when I first joined the concept of two separate communities for the RP was brand new and confusing to me. Now we have about 4 comms that need watched (IC, OOC, News, Modly).

Maybe there could be super-beginner questions, intermediate questions and advanced questions.

This would've been insanely helpful when I was applying. I scoured the wiki for information while I was contemplating joining and wound up just reading through the main community and its f-list to figure out how it all worked.

That's actually what I ended up doing when I first joined, too, so I feel you. ^^; The wiki does have a lot of good tips, but they're scattered around. A lot of this is about taking what's already there and condensing it into one, easy to find place.

Yes. I've been confused a few times by some of the things that are common to LJ RPs. I knew what IC and OOC stood for, but I wondered for the longest time what the crap this friend add list thing was about, and I basically had to be walked through my first activity check.

Exactly. It's going to be a universal newbie's guide to LJ RP. It occurred to me that I hadn't seen one before, so I thought I'd take care of the vacuum.

My rough outline of it is:
--About the author
--Terminology
--Who to play
--Journals & layouts (character info, LJlogin, contact post, keeping track of threads)
--Icons (resources, keywords)
--Games (applying, activity, friending, OOC/online comms, logs)
--Writing (grammar, spelling, notifs)
--Using code (formatting, sparkles, entities)
--Etiquette (godmoding, concrit, translations, conflict, crediting)
--The end (thanks, questions)

I don't think I've missed anything. XD;

Encourage people to have their characters talk to everyone, not just canonmates. I haven't seen it happen here, but I've been in previous RPs where there were cliques, and muns only talking with muns in their own respective fandom. And hell, DDD has some pretty obscure fandoms, *lol* but all sorts of cracktacular crossover friendships, relationships, etc.

...we should do the DDD OTP post again. That was epic.

The point of multi-fandom games is interacting with OTHER fandoms. I've been in so many games where good characters come in and suddenly keep to just their own.

I know this is listed in one of the newbie guides we have already somewhere on the wiki, but definitely include a bit about the difference between posting to the main comm and posting to character journals, and between threads and logs. And maybe something about the events comm here too? For those EPIC logs?

Oh! On this note, it should probably mention somewhere that posts to just one or two people should be kept to private journals (I mean the ones that are locked from everyone else).

It happens every now and then that someone makes a post to the main comm that's locked to just one person.

Yes, this too. Maybe phrase it 'posts that have no public content content be kept to private journals'? I've seen posts with multiple locks to multiple people on DDD proper as well.
